Ron M. Walls, MD, FRCPC, FACEP, FAAEM, Editor-in-Chief

Dr. Walls has conducted extensive clinical research on emergency airway management and emergency cardiology. He is the principal investigator of NEAR (the National Emergency Airway Registry), co-chaired the steering committee for ER-TIMI 19 (Early Retavase-Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction), and has investigated strategies for identifying patients with acute ischemic coronary syndromes. Dr. Walls is Senior Editor of Rosen's Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice (5th and 6th editions) and serves as a peer reviewer for six emergency medicine and anesthesia journals and the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Walls has been Editor-in-Chief of Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since the publication's launch in 1997.

John A. Marx, MD, FACEP, Deputy Editor

Dr. Marx's research emphasis is on trauma, especially abdominal trauma, and alcohol-related emergencies. He is a former president of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. Dr. Marx is Editor-in-Chief of Rosen's Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice (5th and 6th editions) and was a member of the founding editorial boards of Academic Emergency Medicine, Journal of Emergency Medicine, and Emergindex (Microindex). He has been writing for Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since the publication's launch in 1997 and has been Deputy Editor since 2002.

Jill M. Baren, MD, FACEP, Associate Editor

Dr. Baren's research interests focus on acute asthma and health services delivery and access to care for asthma patients. She is the principal investigator in a series of multicenter and local trials examining strategies to improve the rate of primary care follow-up after an emergency department visit. Dr. Baren is currently completing a Master of Bioethics degree and is also conducting research on informed consent in emergency medicine research. She is the emergency department liaison and an attending physician at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Baren is the senior editor of a forthcoming textbook in pediatric emergency medicine. She has been writing for Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since 1999.

Diane M. Birnbaumer, MD, FACEP, Associate Editor

Dr. Birnbaumer is residency-trained and board-certified in both internal medicine and emergency medicine. A lecturer on emergency medicine topics nationally and internationally, Dr. Birnbaumer recently received both the Outstanding Speaker of the Year Award and the Outstanding Contribution to Education Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians. Her areas of interests are airway management, infectious diseases, and emergencies in the elderly patient. She has been writing for Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since the publication's launch in 1997.

J. Stephen Bohan, MS, MD, FACP, FACEP, Associate Editor

Dr. Bohan studies emergency department design and operations and the role of evidence-based medicine in clinical decision making and in the management of chest pain. Before joining the Brigham and Women's Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Bohan had a career as a U.S. Naval Medical Officer, serving in Europe, Asia, and North America. He has been writing for Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since 2000.

James M. Christenson, MD, FRCPC, Associate Editor

Dr. Christenson's research focuses on cardiac arrest and acute coronary syndromes. He has participated in trials of antidysrhythmic agents and antithrombotic therapy for acute coronary syndromes and is currently evaluating a destination policy for patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction diagnosed in the field. He played a major role in randomized trials investigating fibrinolysis, aminophylline, and public access defibrillation for cardiac arrest, and is currently studying biphasic energy levels and a cardiac compression device. In addition, Dr. Christenson developed a clinical prediction rule for the early discharge of patients presenting with chest pain. Dr. Christenson is Director of the Emergency Medicine Research Program at Providence Health Care, University of British Columbia. He has been writing for Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since the publication's launch in 1997.

Kristi L. Koenig, MD, FACEP, Associate Editor

Dr. Koenig has lectured nationally and internationally and she has written numerous articles on disaster and emergency management topics, including bioterrorism and medical response to major earthquakes. Dr. Koenig's interests include health policy and systems analysis, homeland security, disaster triage, and medical response to use of weapons of mass destruction. She has been writing for Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since the publication's launch in 1997.

Susan B. Promes, MD, FACEP, Associate Editor

Dr. Promes' clinical and research interests focus on graduate medical education and ultrasound use in the emergency department. She is actively involved in ultrasound education for the American College of Emergency Physicians and is a member of ACEP's Educational Meetings Committee and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine's Program Committee. Richard D. Zane, MD, Associate Editor

Dr. Zane's primary research interests are emergency medical services and prehospital care, emergency preparedness, and bioterrorism defense. He has had extensive experience in designing systems of prehospital care and disaster response and has been an advisor to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on issues of hospital emergency preparedness. Dr. Zane has been writing for Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since 2002.

Peter Rosen, MD, FACEP, Contributing Editor

Dr. Rosen's research interests have focused on airway management, resident and postgraduate education, management of difficult patients, and medical decisions and decision errors. Dr. Rosen was elected to the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine in 1993. The founding editor of what is now Rosen's Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice, Dr. Rosen is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his important contributions to the field of emergency medicine. He is also a senior board member and consultant to the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Rosen has been contributing to Journal Watch Emergency Medicine since the publication's launch in 1997.
